Katherine Stern is a general surgeon who specializes in colorectal surgery. Dr. Stern has a strong interest in treating cancers of the colon, rectum, and anus, as well as benign anorectal disease, functional disorders of the pelvic floor, rectal prolapse, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Stern performs minimally invasive surgery using robotic, laparoscopic, and transanal endoscopic techniques. She is passionate about multidisciplinary collaboration, optimizing outcomes after surgery, and treatment strategies that improve quality of life.

Dr. Stern completed medical school at UC Irvine School of Medicine in Irvine, CA and residency at UCSF East Bay General Surgery Residency Program in Oakland, CA. During residency, she received support from the National Institutes of Health to complete a research fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. During this time, she earned a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology, Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Washington School of Public Health. She has published several articles in high impact journals and presented her work at international and national academic conferences. She served as an administrative chief resident during her final year of residency training. Dr. Stern went on to complete a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles General Medical Center in Los Angeles. “What I enjoy most about surgery is the shared decision-making and continuity I have with my patients as they progress through stages of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery,” she notes.

When she is not treating patients, Dr. Stern enjoys swimming, hiking, and international travel.
